Choreographer and activist Alvin Ailey was born on January 5th 1931. With his work he popularized modern dance and brought it to wider publics.

In 1958 he founded his own company, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, in order to realize his vision of greater African-american participation in modern dance. Through his dances he aimed to share and spread the African-american cultural experience. To achieve so, he drew his themes from history and his own personal experiences and used elements of his roots and heritage, such as blues and gospel music, jazz dance and African dances. His signature work Revelations is considered one of the most popular modern dance pieces of all times.

His company is carrying on his vision, performing repertoire pieces and creating new ones. Caught by David Parson is a representative example of the company’s work: amazing dancers of various races and nationalities, with athletic bodies, that defy gravity… and fly!
